ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – One civilian was killed and at least 11 others were injured in Turkish shelling on the northern Syrian areas of Kobani and Tal Abyad, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

The attacks occurred at 12:10 p.m., local time, with the "Turkish occupation" targeting three sites in Kobani town's center, the SDF said in a statement. Ankara's forces also shelled villages surrounding Kobani as well as the Tal Abyad countryside.

The bombings have reportedly killed a civilian by the name of Ibrahim Sharif and wounded eleven others. Some of the victims have been taken to nearby hospitals due to the severity of their injuries, the SDF said. There were also reports of widespread damage to peoples' homes and property.

After Turkey conducted a cross-border attack into northeastern Syria in October 2019, Russia and the US reached separate ceasefire deals with Ankara, allowing Turkish troops to control the area between Tal Abyad and Serekaniye.

Despite such agreements, Turkish-backed groups and the Turkish army itself continue to target SDF-held areas periodically.

In some cases, villagers living in Syrian-Turkish border areas are killed in bombardments by Turkish-backed groups.

Also in December, a Turkish drone strike killed two people and injured two others near a Russian military base in the northern Syrian city of Kobani.
