There are about 60,000 residents in the al-Hol camp. The majority of the facility's residents are Iraqis and Syrians. However, many foreign residents also live there, many of whom are believed to have ISIS links.

Local authorities have attempted to reduce pressure on the camp by repatriating Iraqis and expediting the departure of displaced Syrian families. Recently, 95 Iraqi families were repatriated from al-Hol.

In the last two months, there has been an uptick in violence and ISIS activities in the camp. According to SOHR statistics, ISIS-affiliated suspects carried out ten murders in al-Hol in December 2021, all Syrians or Iraqis.
