Lithuanian FM thanks PM Barzani for cooperation with EU states on migrant crisis

He also expressed his country’s readiness to enhance bilateral ties with the KRG in areas of mutual interest, particularly in the education sector and study programs.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani discussed bilateral ties and the migrant crisis in Europe with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis on Monday. 

Barzani received Landsbergis in his office in Erbil, where they discussed bilateral ties, the political process in Iraq, and the migrant crisis in Europe. 

The prime minister expressed his government’s readiness to cooperate with EU states on the migrant issue and emphasized the importance of stopping illegal migration and human trafficking.

Landsbergis thanked the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for its cooperation with EU states on that issue and for facilitating the voluntary return of a large number of Kurdish migrants stranded on the borders of Belarus and EU states. 

He also expressed his country’s readiness to enhance bilateral ties with the KRG in areas of mutual interest, particularly in the education sector and study programs.

Thousands of Kurds have attempted to reach Western Europe through Belarus, often with the help of smugglers. European countries have urged Baghdad and Erbil to stop flights and crack down on smugglers.

Earlier on Monday, Landsbergis met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations Safeen Dizayee.
